Daily Skincare Routine for Oily Skin

Having oily skin can be challenging. There’s the challenge of finding the perfect skincare for your skin that won’t clog your pores and cause breakouts while keeping it hydrated and supple.

For those who aren’t aware of what it means to have oily skin, here’s a brief.

What does it mean to have ‘Oily skin’?

When the sebaceous glands of the skin produce excess sebum, it leads to oily skin. Oily skin means having an accumulation of excess oil on your skin. This excess oil leads to clogging of pores which in turn leads to acne breakouts and pimples.

Oily skin can also be a result of extremely humid weather and the usage of the wrong products for the skin. Whatever it might be, you can keep your skin in control if not get rid of the oily skin in totality.

Day-time Skincare Routine

  • Cleanser
Begin your day with a gentle cleanser. A cleanser rejuvenates your skin by removing excess oils and impurities from your face. Light gel-based formulations that combat excess oil and unclog pores are ideal face cleansers for oily skin.  Foaming cleansers are great at removing excess oil build-up on the T-zones.

See SkinQ’s Daily Glow Cleanser for all skin types. This pH-balanced, soap-free formulation is enriched with active ingredients of Niacinamide, Evening Primrose Oil, and Glycerine and deep cleans skin without irritating skin.

  • Toner
As the name suggests, toner helps maintain an evenly toned skin, regulate pH levels, and unclog pores. Toners can combat excess oil secretion and reduce breakouts without irritating the skin and stripping its barrier. It can also shrink pores which is a plus point for anybody with oily skin as large open pores are a big concern.

Pick a gentle toner formulated with plant extracts like aloe vera, chamomile, rose, etc.

  • Serum
Serums can be a great addition to your skincare routine. For the day, Vitamin C serum is a good choice for oily skin due to its anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce acne, sun damage, redness, and pigmentation. Avoid thick oil-based formulations as they can clog your pores and cause breakouts.

Check Out SkinQ’s Vitamin C Glow Serum for all skin types. This dermatologist-formulated potent antioxidant serum is enriched with the active ingredients of L-ascorbic Acid, Ferulic Acid, Emblica, and Sodium Hyaluronate. It gives you the multiple benefits of reduced sun damage, pigmentation, and gives a brightened appearance to the skin. This is a Vitamin C serum for oily skin you can try out.

  • Moisturizer
Moisturizer is important for hydrating the skin and improving its texture. Face moisturizer for oily skin should ideally be a gel, non-greasy formulation, packed with the right active ingredients.  Oil-free moisturizers give the right amount of hydration without clogging pores.

During the day, moisturizer can be skipped because
     a) You have oily skin which does not require so much moisture and b) The moisture from serum and sunscreen is more than enough for the day.

  • Sunscreen
The importance of sunscreen cannot be stressed enough. It is the holy grail that protects you from UV rays and sun damage. Be it indoors or outdoors, sunscreen needs to be applied every day.  Oily skin types should opt for a gel-based, oil-free non-comedogenic sunscreen with a broad spectrum.

Sunscreen for oily skin should contain ingredients like Zinc, Vitamin C, fruit extracts, and caffeine. Vitamin C is an effective anti-oxidant that combats pigmentation, dullness, uneven skin tone, and dark spots. Zinc helps in clearing acne-causing bacteria from the skin and reducing oil production. Caffeine is another antioxidant that removes excess oil and dirt from the skin surface.

Check out SkinQ’s Sun Protect Gel with SPF 40 and PA++++ for all skin types. Enriched with Vitamin C, this non-comedogenic sunscreen has a non-greasy, non-sticky light gel formulation that leaves no white cast. It commits to providing skin with photoprotection and reduces tanning and sun damage. As the description suggests, the Sun Protect Gel is an ideal sunscreen for oily skin.

Night-time skincare routine

  • Cleanser
While cleansers are excellent for removing all the gunk accumulated on your face after a day out, you should cleanse even if you have been indoors the entire day. Use a gel-based cleanser to get rid of excess oil and impurities from your face. However, it should not disrupt the skin barrier and natural oil of the skin.

If you have oily acne-prone skin, choose a cleanser that specifically treats acne. Look for cleansers containing Salicylic acid, Citric acid, Niacinamide, and Glycolic acid. Steer away from cleansers containing alcohol, deodorizers, and other irritants.

  • Toner
Choose a toner that is hydrating and balances your skin’s pH which often gets disrupted by using different products. Toners containing Beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) are best suited for oily and acne-prone skin types. They are oil-soluble which means they help reduce oil and congested pores or enlarged pores. The most commonly used BHA is Salicylic Acid, a great exfoliating agent which penetrates deep inside the skin to unclog excess oil, preventing breakouts and blackheads.

  • Serum
The serum is a great multi-purpose skincare product; it can be a treatment for various skin concerns. Oily skin is commonly associated with acne and open pores. Opt for lightweight non-comedogenic serums—serums that will not clog your pores and keep the oil in control.

Try SkinQ’s Oil and Acne Control Elixir
for oil control, break-out control, and reducing open pores. This Dermatologist-formulated serum comes with the active ingredients of Salicylic Acid, Azelaic Acid, Niacinamide, Aloe Vera, and Retinol Liposomes. This is a promising face serum for oily, acne-prone skin.

  • Moisturizer
As mentioned earlier, moisturizer is a hydrating agent for the skin. It also contains essential oils for moisturizing the skin and for keeping an even texture. If you are using one, go for an oil-free, water-based formula that hydrates the skin as well as keeps it non-greasy. However, you don’t need to use one if your skin doesn’t demand it.

Weekly Skincare

Every week, you have to exfoliate your skin to remove the build-up of dead skin cells. Having ingredients like glycolic acid and lactic acid in face masks for oily skin is beneficial as they are chemical exfoliants.

Face Mask

Using a face mask weekly boosts skin and seals pores. Clay masks are ideal for oily and acne-prone skin. Face masks also help decrease surface oil from the skin and they help in reducing blackheads.
